When starting his own cafe, Rafaelle Iorio wanted to make the Iorio classic Italian dining concept available to everyone across New Orleans, so everyone would have a chance to enjoy a slice of original New York style pizza.

By the end of my third hour in the bustling city of New Orleans, I had learnt that there are two highly reliable measures of a NOLA eatery’s worthiness: the length of the line and the thoughtfulness with which the establishment displays their edible treasures. Confession: I stumbled upon Nola Mia after failing to locate another, highly-rated beignet place I had planned on visiting in the French Quarter. There was another beignet place right next door but I chose Nola Mia because it was much busier. More confession: my very first cannoli was nothing short of a revelation.

The prices were surprisingly reasonable especially considering the quality. A cannoli with a sweet filling cost $2.95 at the time of my visit and a cappuccino $2.50 (plus a small tip for the barista).

For my first visit, I arrived shortly after 11am on a weekday and the place was jam-packed with customers. The queue to order and pay was quick and new customers, some laden with luggage, kept pouring in. The service at the pastry counter was friendly and efficient.

Very local vibe. We spotted this place on our way from the streetcar and went the next afternoon for lunch. Full of locals and and real busy Italian cafe atmosphere! (You gotta half push your way to the bar and half yell for your espresso… just enjoy it!) Staff hardworking and helpful with names of things even with little English. The pizza was hot, salty, crunchy and topped with the perfect amount of tomato sauce and cheese. Every bite was pure pleasure! Espresso was, as always, amazing. I shared (begrudgingly) a cannoli with my boyfriend- perfectly warm, crunchy, sweet pastry filled with a chocolate shaving ricotta filling. When I say it was the best lunch I’ve ever had – I’m not joking, not to mention it was eaten Italian style standing up. Please, everyone, if you love food, go here.

I would happily go back to New Orleans just to visit the Nola Mia Cafe again. The city itself has much to offer in terms of history, food, art and music. But the cannoli was something truly special.

I visited Nola Mia multiple times and my biggest dilemma was: which flavors of gelato to choose. I have a particular fondness for pistachio and chocolate. But have one of each of the many they offer, is my recommendation.

If you are in NOLA do not buy a cannoli anywhere else. If you are within 200 miles of New Orleans (The Crescent City) get in your car immediately and drive to Nola Mia’s. The cannoli’s are that good.

After my first visit, I looked up Nola Mia on Tripadvisor and wholeheartedly agreed with many reviewers’ gushing superlatives.

Best Milkshake‘s

Whilst in New Orleans we’d eaten a lot of ice cream and wanted something else and saw that Nola Mia offered milkshakes/fruit smoothies and it was the best we’d had. It was so tasty and full of flavor. Price was reasonable and good value!

If I could give 6 stars I would!

A great selection of classic and modern Gelato flavors.
Wonderful options for Vegan visitors, their chocolate gelato is the best gelato I have ever eaten even in Italy.
I would visit NOLA again just to have more Gelato from here!
No matter how long or short your stay is in New Orleans, make sure you visit NOLA MIA!

Amazing vegan ice cream

So nice to be able to enjoy an ice cream with others! So many vegan options of proper ice cream, they had sorbets as well. Friendly and helpful. They even have vegan cones for the ice cream too! Reasonable price for location as very central – the portions are huge! Would recommend and will definitely be going back!

Great Gelato in NOLA!

Great gelato with a good variety to choose from. Prices were reasonable and the service was always friendly.

Three words — believe the hype. Nola Mia is — and I rarely use this expression because it’s already so overused — a hidden gem. It is real, authentic, delicious, fresh, massive (seriously, the sandwich could serve as lunch and dinner)…it is — I’m just going to say it — the best Italian sandwich/panini I’ve ever had. My grandfather is Italian (like, real Italian — he was born in Sicily) and I’m sure even he would be impressed.

I ordered The Capish Panini the first time I went, but this time I ordered the Cubano (Cuban Sandwich) for pick up. I strongly — strongly! — suggest you order ahead of time; they’re super busy and nobody likes waiting. I was told when I placed my order that it would be ready in 5-10 minutes.

When I went to pick up, my sandwich was ready, wrapped and I only had to pay — I actually had to borrow $2.00 from a coworker…next time I’ll come prepared. Also, even though there were a couple suits eating inside, I’d suggest taking to-go. It’s a small shop (read: not many tables/chairs) and, to be honest, I’m more of a to-go girl anyway. The prices are very — very, very, very! — reasonable. Seriously, the panini was huge. I’ve paid a lot more for a lot less; this might be the best deal in NoLa, sandwich-wise.

Now, time to brag about the sandwich — the delicious, Cubano Panini. First off, all the panini’s sounded amazing, but I’m a sucker for hot and semi spicy spread. And, once I saw pickles, I was sold. It was heavenly — the ingredients were so fresh, it was almost like being in Cuba. (In fact, when I got back to the office, I made myself a cafe con leche and, I have to say, I felt like a true Latina.*)

Bonus: They love Yelp! I told the sweet, blue haired girl — love your hair! — behind the register that I found Nola Mia through Yelp and she showed me the “Yelp Wall.” They had printed and posted their reviews on a bulletin board near the register, which I thought was just so, so cute. As an avid Yelp-er, it’s nice to see businesses appreciate Yelp.

*Italian (I-tal-YEN) — you have to read it like this for it to sound witty.

The best panini in New Orleans

Fantastic Panini and extremely personable staff. If we were here longer we would come every day! I will recommend it to everyone I know.

Best find in The Crescent City!

We happened to stumble on this little place on our way back to our hotel to escape the crowds near The French Quarter. We were hungry for lunch but didn’t want to sit at an overpriced trattoria or to settle for a stale old sandwich or weak snack. Thanks to Nola Mia we didn’t have to! We grabbed a quick Cuppi sandwich that was fresh, delicious and filling and it only cost around $7 (a steal in expensive New Orleans). Definitely make your way here to grab a fabulous lunch!

Great!!!

That place definitely deserves a good comment.

You can get fresh panini with whatever you want in it.

Good service. Fair price.

Stop there for one of the best ice creams you’ll ever have in NOLA.

This is the first time in history that we’re doing this because of NOLA’s situation to follow guidelines to keep our guests safe!
